Applying to a school for the first time can feel like walking into a
maze. Forms, certificates, interactions, seat confirmations and fee
deadlines all arrive at once, and every school seems to do things
slightly differently. If you are applying to a CBSE school in Gunjur,
Varthur, Sarjapur or anywhere in Bengaluru East, this guide breaks the
process into clear steps so you always know what comes next.
We use M S Dhoni Global School (MSDGS) as the
working example, since its admission steps are published on its website,
and we point out where other schools commonly differ. If you are still
deciding which school to apply to, start with our pillar guide on the best CBSE school in
Bengaluru East.
Step 1:
Decide on the Grade and Check Age Eligibility
Your first task is to work out which class your child should apply
for. For the early years, this depends on your child’s age. MSDGS
publishes the following age guidelines:
| Class | Age |
|---|---|
| Nursery | 3-4 years |
| Junior KG | 4-5 years |
| Senior KG | 5-6 years |
| Class 1 | 6-7 years |
| Class 2 | 7-8 years |
| Class 3 | 8-9 years |
The school allows a one to two-year age relaxation per class for
physically or mentally challenged students, which the Principal can
extend if needed. For help interpreting these age bands, and for what to
do if your child is on the border, read our guide to nursery admission age
criteria in Bengaluru.
Step 2: Shortlist and
Visit the School
Before you buy or collect any form, visit the campus. Spend time in
the classrooms, the sports area, the infirmary and the washrooms. Speak
to a teacher if you can. Our list of questions to ask during a
school visit will help you gather the right information in a short
time.
At this stage, also ask about:
- Whether seats are available in the grade you want
- The academic calendar. For MSDGS, the 2027-28 year tentatively
begins on 1 June 2027 - Transport availability for your locality
- The fee structure and when payments are due
Step 3: Collect
and Complete the Admission Form
At MSDGS, the process begins with completing the admission form in
full. Incomplete forms often delay the process, so take your time. Use
the exact name and date of birth that appear on the birth certificate,
because mismatches can cause problems later in the child’s records,
especially when CBSE registration happens in higher classes.
If you prefer to start online, the school has an admission enquiry page where you can
share your details and request a callback.
Step 4: Gather and Attach
Documents
For the application itself, MSDGS asks for certified photocopies
of:
- The child’s birth certificate
- The marksheet of the last class attended (for children applying to
higher classes)
Once a seat is offered, the school asks for a wider set of documents,
including passport-size photographs, residence proof, an Aadhaar card
copy and a vaccination card copy. For Grade I onwards, the original
Transfer Certificate and a copy of the previous class’s report card are
also needed. From Grade 9, a community certificate copy is required. We
have collected everything in one place in our document
checklist for school admission.
A practical tip: keep three sets of photocopies and a soft copy of
each document on your phone. You will be surprised how often you need
them.
Step 5: Submit the
Form at the School Office
Submit the completed form and attachments at the School
Administrative Office. MSDGS accepts submissions between 9 am and 3 pm
on working days. The school does not list a specific application
deadline on its website, but seats are limited, so earlier is safer. Ask
the office to acknowledge receipt and note your application number.
Step 6: The Evaluation
and Interaction
After you submit your application, the school evaluates your child
based on “evaluation, interaction and other admission criteria.” For
nursery and kindergarten, an interaction typically means a short,
friendly session where a teacher engages the child in simple
conversation, picture identification or play-based activities. There is
no formal test for young children, and schools are looking for
communication, comfort and readiness, not a performance.
For older children, the school may use a short assessment in language
and maths. The MSDGS website does not detail the format, so ask the
admissions team what to expect.
How to prepare your child
- Talk through the visit in positive, simple language (“We are going
to meet a nice teacher”). - Avoid drilling or flashcards just before the interaction. Calm,
well-rested children do best. - Let your child respond for themselves. Do not coach answers in the
room.
Our guide on how to know
whether your child is ready for nursery goes deeper on this.
Step 7: Admission Decision
The school makes its decision after the evaluation. At MSDGS, the
Pro-Vice Chairperson’s decision is final. If your child is offered a
seat, you will be told what documents and fees are required to confirm
it. If a seat is not offered right away, ask whether your child can be
placed on a waiting list.
Step 8:
Complete Formalities and Confirm the Seat
Once you receive an offer:
- Read the fee schedule and understand what is included.
- Pay within the deadline given by the school.
- Submit the remaining documents, including any original
certificates. - Ask about uniform, books and transport arrangements.
- Join the annual orientation for new parents.
MSDGS holds an annual orientation for new parents, and teachers are
available for consultation with a day’s notice. This is a good moment to
raise any questions about routines, communication and expectations.
Step 9:
Arrange Transport and Prepare for Day One
Transport charges at MSDGS depend on the distance between your home
and the school, and a route map is available at the school office. Buses
are GPS-tracked, have a female attendant and use seat belts. For a
checklist on what to verify, see school bus safety
checklist for parents. To prepare your child emotionally, read first day of school tips
for parents.
A Sample Timeline You Can
Follow
If you like to see the whole process on a calendar, here is a
realistic plan for a family applying for the 2027-28 session.
- Week 1: Shortlist three schools, read their
websites and note the admission contacts. - Week 2: Visit two schools and collect forms. Ask
each one for fees in writing. - Week 3: Visit the third school, fill in your
scorecard and discuss with your partner. - Week 4: Photocopy and certify documents, then
submit the form at your first-choice school and, if you wish, a backup
school. - Weeks 5 to 6: Attend the interaction, wait for the
decision and ask about the waiting list if needed. - Weeks 7 to 8: Pay the fee, submit remaining
documents and book transport.
Keep a simple tracker with the school name, the date you applied, the
person you spoke to and the next action. It takes five minutes to set up
and saves a great deal of stress.
What Schools Look For
During Evaluation
Parents often imagine the evaluation as a hurdle. In reality, schools
use it to understand your child so they can place and support them well.
For young children, teachers usually observe:
- Communication: Does the child respond to simple
questions, in any language they know? - Comfort: Can the child separate from a parent for a
few minutes? - Curiosity: Does the child show interest in toys,
pictures or activities? - Motor skills: Can the child hold a crayon, stack
blocks or follow a simple movement? - Social behaviour: Does the child share or take
turns?
None of these require special training. A child who plays, talks and
explores at home is usually well prepared. For older children, schools
may check reading, writing and basic numeracy to place them in the right
class, not to rank them.
Common Questions About the
Process
What if I miss the
admission window?
Contact the school directly. Some schools take late applications if
seats remain, and many maintain waiting lists.
Can I apply to more than
one school?
Yes, and it is wise to do so. Apply to two or three schools that fit
your criteria and compare offers before paying any fee.
Is a donation required?
Be cautious about any request for payments that do not appear in the
official fee structure. Ask for all charges in writing, and read our
guide on comparing
school fees.
